You’ll find Rules on page 129 of the latest Good Food Guide, and all the team at Rules are thrilled to have been recognised in such a public way:

“I was sitting right underneath a huge mural of an armoured Mrs Thatcher looking like she was accompanying George against the dragon,” observed one first-time visitor to this bastion of patriotic Englishness. London’s oldest restaurant purrs along like a Bentley, thanks to outstandingly polite staff who are helpful but never simpering. Chef David Chambers has been replaced by Richard Sawyer, although the menu is as traditional as ever; this is the world of Pimms No 1, roast grouse and lemon posset. Everything depends on first rate supplies, whether it’s sea-fresh Cuan rock oysters or roast squab with truffles, foie gras, white onions and red wine. Occasionally there are detours for, say, grilled wild sea bass with pearl barley and summer herb risotto, but it’s back home for queen of puddings with apricot sauce. The conservative wine list offers fair value from £15.95.
